New bishop to be ordained/installed for Diocese of Des Moines

Bishop-elect William Joensen will be ordained and installed as the 10th bishop of the Diocese of Des Moines during a 2 p.m. Mass on Friday, Sept. 27 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 7075 Ashworth Road in West Des Moines. The episcopal ordination is being held at the church with the largest capacity in the Des Moines diocese. More than 1,500 tickets have been shared.
Anyone without a ticket is invited to watch the ordination in real-time at or Members of the press attending the event are encouraged to contact diocesan Communication Director Anne Marie Cox prior to the event at 515-333-8387 for a ticket.
Public events include an evening prayer service that will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26 at St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High St. in Des Moines. All are invited. In an ancient ritual, the cathedral’s doors will literally be opened for the incoming bishop as the people welcome him to the Des Moines diocese.
The public is also invited to greet the new bishop immediately after his ordination. A reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Ron Pearson Center, 5820 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
