Campus Ministry

Here at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and Drake Newman Student Center, our mission is to serve university students within the Des Moines area through worship, prayer, fellowship, and service.  St. Catherine’s is a “spiritual home away from home” for Drake University and Des Moines area college students. All are welcome, regardless of faith or background. Whether you need a break from school, a place to pray, or a quiet study environment, St. Catherine’s is a home for you.

Praying together unites us as one family, embracing true communion. At St. Catherine’s we are happy to offer many different forms of liturgy and worship through the traditions of the Catholic Church, implemented by our students in our Liturgy Ministry. All students are welcome, and we encourage new students and people of all faiths to join us.

Check out our mass times for daily worship. We especially encourage students to join us on Thursday nights for our candlelight mass at 9:15 p.m., followed by THAM (Thursdays after Mass), a time for playing games and sharing food and fellowship, and at our Sunday evening mass at 5:00 p.m. followed by student supper. We offer adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 9:00 a.m., on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., and on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. To learn more about your faith, we have programs led by our Faith Formation Ministry, and Bible studies led by our team of FOCUS missionaries.

“Celebrating Mass and adoration with my friends and other Drake students has given me an opportunity to meet new people I otherwise would not have encountered. These friendships, rooted in faith, have been the greatest gift during my time at Drake.” ~Abby Crupi ‘25

We are blessed to be a part of Drake University’s community at St. Catherine’s. Our doors are open to all university students looking for a place to belong. Join us for coffeeshop hours on Monday mornings, stop in for a quiet place to study, and follow our DU Bulldog Catholic organization for updates on events. From pickleball tournaments to Friday morning pancake breakfasts, you have a place in this community.

“St. Catherine’s has been a home away from home for me during my time at Drake! The friends I’ve made at events and on the intramural teams are friends that will be with me for life. Playing on the St. Catherine’s indoor and outdoor intramural soccer teams has always been my favorite part of the semester!” ~Michael Bracco, ‘25

Embracing the richness of our Catholic Social Teaching, at St. Catherine’s we believe service is not just something to do but a way to live. Service goes beyond charity; we live by embracing social justice and implementing change for those who need it most. Join our students in our Service Ministry as they lead projects that benefit our community and educate each other on ways to serve. Encounter Jesus by meeting Him where He exists; within our brothers and sisters in need.

"Ever since I was first introduced to St. Catherine's, I've appreciated the passion for service that we share as a community. From regularly volunteering at organizations like Mary's Helping Hands to participating in local events like Reggie's Sleepout, it's inspiring to see so many students get involved in causes that are important to them.
