Diocese asks for prayers, donations to support victims of Hurricane Harvey
Bishop Richard Pates asks parishes in the Diocese of Des Moines to hold an emergency collection in the next few weeks to provide financial aid for the Gulf Coast devastated by the catastrophic Hurricane Harvey and subsequent rain that’s dumped an unprecedented amount of water on Texas.
Donations can be made online at dmdiocese.org/giving.cfm. All contributions will be given on behalf of the Diocese of Des Moines both to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
“The images we’re seeing from Corpus Christi, Rockport and Houston show communities suffering unimaginable damage from wind and rain that continues to fall at unprecedented levels. Homes are flooded. Cars are submerged. The pictures of families fleeing their homes with just the clothes on their backs, of people wading chest-deep in water seeking shelter, are heartbreaking,” said Bishop Pates.
In addition to financial support, he asks for prayers on a continuing basis for those affected.
“This is a time when people of good will must come together to provide prayer and support to our neighbors to the south,” he added. “The toll of the storm will continue to rise and we know the recovery process will be long and arduous.”
